What is Impedance Audiometry?
Impedance Audiometry, also known as Tympanometry with Acoustic Reflex Testing, measures how the eardrum responds to changes in air pressure. It helps determine the mobility of the middle-ear system and evaluates whether the eardrum, ossicles, and reflex pathways are functioning properly.

How the Test Is Done at Adro

Step-by-Step Clinic Procedure
Initial Consultation:
- The audiologist reviews your symptoms, ear complaints, and relevant medical history.
Ear Examination:
- A quick otoscopic check is done to ensure the ear canal is free from wax or infection, as these can affect the results.
Probe Placement:
- A soft, airtight probe is gently inserted at the entrance of your ear canal.
Tympanometry Test:
- The device varies air pressure and measures how your eardrum moves in response, producing a tympanogram instantly.
Acoustic Reflex Testing:
- Soft and moderate sounds are played to measure the contraction of the middle-ear muscles.
Result Interpretation:
- Your tympanogram and reflex thresholds are analysed and explained in easy-to-understand terms.
Recommendations:
- Based on the findings, you may be advised on treatment options, ENT referrals, or further hearing tests if required.
Patient Preparation
No major preparation is needed, but the following tips help ensure accurate results:
- Ensure your ears are clean and free from excess wax
- Avoid using earbuds or cotton buds before the test
- Inform the audiologist of ear pain, blocked sensation, or recent infections
- Keep children relaxed and still during the procedure
