Types of Hearing Loss
Hearing loss can affect people of all ages and may occur gradually or suddenly. Understanding the type of hearing loss is the first step towards finding the right treatment and hearing solution. At Adro Hearing Aid Centre, we use advanced diagnostic tools to accurately identify your hearing condition and recommend the most suitable solution for your lifestyle and needs.
- Conductive Hearing Loss
Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound waves are unable to pass efficiently through the outer or middle ear. This prevents sound from reaching the inner ear, making it seem as though the volume is simply turned down. Common causes include: ear infections, wax build-up, fluid in the middle ear, or damage to the eardrum or tiny ear bones. Treatment options: In many cases, conductive hearing loss can be treated through medical procedures or hearing aids designed to amplify sound effectively.
- Sensorineural Hearing Loss
This is the most common and permanent type of hearing loss. It happens when the inner ear (cochlea) or the auditory nerve is damaged. People often describe sounds as muffled or distorted, even when they are loud enough. Common causes include: aging (presbycusis), prolonged exposure to loud noise, viral infections, or genetic factors. Treatment options: Although sensorineural hearing loss cannot be cured, modern digital hearing aids and assistive hearing technologies can significantly improve clarity and communication.
- Mixed Hearing Loss
As the name suggests, mixed hearing loss is a combination of conductive and sensorineural components. This means both the outer/middle ear and the inner ear or auditory nerve are affected. Common causes include: chronic ear infections, head trauma, or a long-standing untreated hearing condition. Treatment options: A tailored combination of medical management and advanced hearing aids provides effective results for mixed hearing loss.
