Special / Advance Hearing Tests
At Adro Hearing Aid Centre, we provide a full suite of advanced audiological special tests comprising of SISI, TDT, SDS, SRT, ECOG, VEMP that go beyond routine hearing assessments to accurately identify complex ear and nerve-related conditions. These tests help our audiologists determine the exact site of the problem—whether it lies in the cochlea, auditory nerve, vestibular system, or central auditory pathways.
With state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment across our centres in Chennai, Arumanai, Nagercoil, Trichy, and Bangalore, we deliver precise, evidence-based hearing and balance evaluations.
Special Tests Available at Adro
SISI – Short Increment Sensitivity Index
- Evaluates the ear’s ability to detect very small changes in loudness. Primarily used to differentiate cochlear sensory loss, especially in cases of recruitment.
- Approx. Time: 10–15 minutes
- Cost: ₹600
TDT – Tone Decay Test
- Assesses auditory nerve fatigue by measuring how sound perception reduces over time. Helps differentiate cochlear vs. retrocochlear lesions such as vestibular schwannoma.
- Approx. Time: 10–12 minutes
- Cost: ₹600
SDS – Speech Discrimination Score
- Measures how clearly a person understands spoken words at a comfortable loudness level. Useful in evaluating clarity of hearing and determining hearing aid benefit.
- Approx. Time: 10 minutes
- Cost: ₹400
SRT – Speech Reception Threshold
- Determines the softest level at which speech can be correctly repeated. Helps verify pure-tone audiometry findings and assess functional hearing needs.

ECOG – Electrocochleography
- An advanced test measuring electrical responses from the cochlea and auditory nerve. Crucial for diagnosing Ménière’s disease, auditory neuropathy, and endolymphatic hydrops.
- Approx. Time: 45–60 minutes
- Cost: ₹2500
- Note: ECOG is available only at select Adro centres. Prior appointment is required.
VEMP – Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential
- VEMP evaluates the function of the otolith organs (saccule & utricle) and the vestibular nerve pathways responsible for balance. It is essential for diagnosing superior canal dehiscence, vestibular neuritis, balance disorders, and inner-ear asymmetries.
- Approx. Time: 30–45 minutes
- Cost: ₹2500

Yes. All tests—including ECOG and VEMP—are non-invasive and safe. Some may involve sound stimulation or surface electrodes but cause no pain.
Not necessarily. You can walk into any Adro Centre for an evaluation, but ENT referrals are recommended for complex neurological or vestibular symptoms.
