1. Otoscopic Examination
The ear impression process always begins with a detailed otoscopic examination.

2. Checking for Earwax
If earwax (cerumen) is present in the ear canal, ear impression should not be taken immediately.

Earwax must be safely removed before proceeding, especially for custom ear moulds used in:
- BTE (Behind-The-Ear)
- ITE (In-The-Ear)
- CIC (Completely-In-Canal)

3. Screening for Ear Infections
If there are any signs of outer or middle ear infection, the ear impression procedure is postponed.
- Taking impressions during infection can be unsafe
- The patient is advised appropriate medical treatment first
